AORTIC DISSECTION

history and definitions:

Definition:
Aortic Dissection (AD) occurs with an intimal tear that allows redirection of blood from from the aorta (true lumen) through this defect into the aortic media creating a false lumen and a dissection plane that separates the aortic intima from the overlying aortic adventitia
History:
  • Sennertus was the first to describe the dissection process.
  • Maunoir named this process Aortic dissection.
  • Laennec defined the tendency of chronically dissected aorta to become aneurysmal.
  • Gurin performed the first aortic fenestration procedure to treat malperfusion syndrome.
  • Abbot and Paulin used cellophane wrapping of the aorta to theoretically prevent aortic rupture.
  • DeBakey successfully performed primary surgical repair of aortic dissection.
